When You Outgrow Who You Used to Be
There comes a point, sometimes sudden, sometimes slow, where the version of you that’s run your life for years doesn’t feel like the real you anymore.
You might start to notice that the:
- things you used to tolerate now drain you.
- goals you once chased don’t mean what they used to.
- way you show up feels off, like you’re wearing an outfit that doesn’t match you anymore.
It’s Not a Crisis. It’s an Identity Shift.
While it might feel like you’re lost and alone, or that there’s something “wrong with you”, please know that you are going to get through this and you’re in the right place.
I know exactly what it’s like to lose years to overthinking, people-pleasing, and trying to hold onto a version of myself that looked “fine” from the outside but didn’t feel like me anymore.
At Olive Lantern this isn’t a place for perfect five-year plans or waiting until you “feel ready.”
It’s for women who want to think clearer, feel stronger, and actually follow through, especially during seasons of change.
And identity change is exactly that, a season.
The In-Between
That place where you’re no longer who you were, but not yet who you’re becoming.
This middle space can feel uncomfortable. You’ve outgrown the roles that once defined you, the reliable one, the achiever, the caretaker, the fixer – but the next version of you hasn’t fully taken shape yet.
It’s easy to think you’re behind.
It’s easy to think you’re meant to have answers by now.
It’s easy to think you should “just figure it out.”
The truth is actually pretty simple:
When you outgrow who you used to be, there’s no going back.
It might feel messy or uncomfortable right now, but that shift is progress, even if it doesn’t feel like that way yet.
Think Clearer: What You’re Actually Outgrowing
Clarity starts with you being honest with yourself.
Not a big life plan, not a dramatic reinvention, just an honest look at what no longer feels aligned.
Ask yourself:
- What roles or expectations feel heavy right now?
- Where am I saying yes out of habit or obligation?
- What parts of me feel more alive than they used to?
- What am I done pretending to enjoy or tolerate?
There are no perfect answers for any of these. You just need to see what’s really going on.
Once you have this awareness and it clicks, this is what starts the ball rolling on shifting everything else.
Feel Stronger: Letting Yourself Be in the Middle
There’s no rush to come up with a solution. You don’t have to decide everything today.
Identity changes aren’t linear or straight forward. They’re built layer by layer and they can feel unpredictable at times.
They happen through:
- things you no longer force
- boundaries you stop negotiating
- the tiny choices that feel more like you
Strength in this season isn’t about powering through.
It’s about trusting that confusion isn’t a problem, it’s actually a sign that you’re evolving.
Take Action: Create Space for Your Next Self to Show Up
When who you were is slowly disappearing and who you’re becoming isn’t clear yet, the smartest thing you can do is create small spaces of clarity.
Not rituals, not routines.
Just space.
Try:
- journaling when something hits a nerve or jumps out at you
- taking a few minutes each day to check in with how you actually feel
- paying attention to what drains you vs what pulls you forward
- adjusting one tiny thing instead of trying to rebuild your entire life
Action doesn’t always look big.
Sometimes it’s simply removing what no longer fits so the next version of you has room to emerge.
The Truth Most Women Don’t Realise Until It Hits Them
You’re not meant to stay the same.
You’re meant to grow out of old identities, old expectations, and old versions of yourself that were built for survival, not fulfilment.
Don’t try to rush this season.
Just stay connected to yourself long enough to let things get clearer.
The in-between isn’t failure, it’s a sign you’re finally paying attention.
Let it be what it is.
Let yourself shift.
Let the next version of you unfold without forcing a timeline or specific outcome.
If you’re in a season where the old version of you doesn’t fit anymore, start with something simple that brings you back to yourself.
